Shannon Valente Weddings » Calgary Wedding Planner & Event Planning - Shannon Valente Weddings - wedding planning and rentals design studio located in Calgary, AB

For the past 8 years, every fall I have had the honour of helping to plan one of Calgary’s hottest event.  The guest list is A list, the outfit are ‘out of this world’ and all funds go to a great cause, Rethink Breast Cancer.

Planet Booby was the theme and I don’t think people could have had anymore fun with their outfits if they tried.  There was music, food, drinks, sweets, candy, a hair station, nail bar, photo booth, a giant spaceship, LED light dancers, amazing decor and one HUGE silent auction, phew!

Throw back Thursday to Anne-Marie and Kovid’s epic Teatro Restaurant Wedding.  Not your typical wedding, although the day had many of the traditional elements, it was also filled with fart jokes and man buns and couldn’t have been anymore fun if we tried!

On a more serious note…I’ve been witness to a lot of great loves after 9+ years as a wedding planner.  Great loves that aren’t concerned with the where and when of the wedding but the WHO.  Anne-Marie and Kovid are the definition of great love and it consumed every aspect of the day, the vows, the speeches, the quite moments.  Thank you for bringing us along for the ride, this was one for the books.

It’s National Popcorn Day!

A fun trend ‘popping’ up at some of our 2016 weddings is a popcorn bar! But don’t stop there…

  • Have a stand alone popcorn bar with pre made sweet and savoury options.
  • Put out buckets of plain popcorn with flavour shakers and let guests go nuts.
  • Add a few popcorn options to your already amazing sweets table.
  • Serve popcorn at the ceremony and let the containers double as wedding programs.
  • Send your guests home with a popcorn wedding favour, popped or un-popped, everyone will love it!
  • And of course, never miss an opportunity for cutes signs and cheesy sayings 😉

Chad and Janelle’s Buffalo Mountain Lodge Wedding was featured on Calgary Bride last year and  I just realized I never blogged it myself, the horror!

A crisp October day Chad and Janelle tied the knot at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Banff, followed by a flower filled reception at Buffalo Mountain Lodge.  The mother of the groom happened to be a retired florist so there was definitely no shortage of flowers, a wedding planners dream!

The ceremony was simple with a solo guitarist and wonderfully quirky anecdotes from Father Jerome.

The reception room was warm and bright with pops of pink, red and gold.  The tables were dressed with chiavari chairs, champagne linens, macaron wedding favours and fresh blooms.  The coziest sweetheart table with oversized leather chairs from the lodge sat in front of the fireplace.

The wedding cake sat on a wood pedestal hand crafted by the brides father and was a delicious coconut cake (the same kind, from the same bakery Chad had scoured the city to find for Janelle on one of their first dates)

They were such a fun couple to work with and the day was brimming with personal touches, laughter, family and friends.

Last month my baby turned 2, so we threw him the sweetest little woodland creature birthday party.  Being that he is a December baby, I told myself I wasn’t going to go too crazy since it’s so close to Christmas.  I did not succeed last year with the Lumberjack themed party but I did come a bit closer this year, it’s just so hard!

For his birthday he was already getting the teepee and fabric campfire I made for him, they also doubled as decor, bonus!  I found a few free printables on Pinterest that fit the theme perfectly.  I added a bean bag toss game that I made from the leftover teepee fabric (a canvas drop cloth from Home Depot) and a punch for a prize box (filled with mini chocolate bars) and the kids loved it.  I also had a craft area set up with cutting/colouring pages where the kids could make animal masks and finger puppets.

Since it was an afternoon party I kept the food simple, a hedgehog cheeseball, apples and marshmallows (to look like mushrooms), ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins), some sandwich wheels and trail mix favours, we are lucky we don’t have any nut allergies in our group of friends.

Let’s also not forget the cake and cupcakes!  I picked up some mini tree and animal figurines at Michaels and added those to the birch cake and cupcakes, I also did a few fox face cupcakes and green coconut to look like grass/moss.  They turned out pretty cute!

I am lucky to know (and live around the corner from) Heather at Orange Trunk Vintage Rentals so I raided her supplies and came up with the wood slabs and CUTE woodland animal napkin rings.

Overall, a happy birthday boy = birthday party success 🙂

Enjoy the few pics I managed to snap, kids parties be crazy, ha!!
